Comprehensive, High-Quality Care Close to Home: Goodland Regional Medical Center
If you haven’t been to Goodland Regional Medical Center lately, you might be surprised at the breadth and quality of care provided right here in Sherman County.
You’re probably aware that the hospital offers inpatient care and has an emergency room and rural health clinic. But did you know that GRMC also has an infusion center delivering chemotherapy and other medications, wound care services, telemedicine services, and a variety of specialist physicians providing dermatology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry and more on site—to name just a few services?
“We invite you to get to know the new Goodland Regional Medical Center,” said Jeanette Filpi, Interim Chief Executive Officer. “As a Critical Access Hospital, our county-owned, community-led facility has so much to offer. There’s little need to leave the community for care, and when patients do seek specialty care in a larger community, our team can still provide services such as imaging, laboratory tests, infusion medications, and more right here. We’re dedicated to being the hub of high-quality, patient-centered care for our community.”
Care Fundamentals
GRMC is here when your family needs urgent care. The GRMC emergency room is open around-the-clock, and our inpatient hospital wing is also staffed 24/7, 365. Our general surgeons routinely perform a range of common procedures, from gallbladder removals and hernia repairs to colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, tendon and ligament repairs, and more.
And our pharmacy serves the medication needs of hospital patients as well as outpatient community members who require infused drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, immune system conditions, osteoporosis and cancer (chemotherapy). At our infusion center, patients receive injections and infusions under the care of trained infusion nurses. This includes medication infusions as well as hydration, port care and flushes, foley care and changes, PICC line care and flushes, wound care, and routine injections of many kinds. If you are a cancer patient, GRMC can work closely with your oncologists so you can receive your chemotherapy treatments close to home.
In addition, our rural health clinic, Goodland Family Health Center, offers walk-in appointments and comprehensive family practice services. Our dedicated team provides a wide range of care, including acute care, chronic disease management, physical exams, prenatal care, immunizations and specialist referrals. Additionally, our Licensed Clinical Social Workers are available for counseling appointments throughout the week, ensuring that we can effectively support the mental health needs of our community, bridging the gap between physical and psychological health.
GRMC also has a laboratory that provides testing for the full gamut of blood, urine and other samples, as well as an imaging center with MRI, CT, bone-density testing, 3D mammography, ultrasound and nuclear imaging.
To assist patients in coordinating care, GRMC recently formed a Patient Advocate position. McKenzie Varney’s job is to help patients with questions or complex care needs make appointments, communicate with multiple providers, work with insurance companies, sign up for Medicare, and get the financial, legal and social support they need for overall wellness. To reach Varney, please call 785-890-4051.
Specialty Care
The extent of specialty care available at GRMC has expanded in recent years. This growth is due to increased visiting specialists, telemedicine service offerings, our affiliation with the Masonic Cancer Alliance, and our inclusion in the CommonSpirit network of hospitals in Northwest Kansas.
Dr. Thomas Eddy, DPM, is a board-certified podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon now providing full-time services in Goodland, with outreach visits to Atwood. Our Specialty Clinic offers cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, gynecology, neurosurgery, pulmonology, orthopedics, dermatology and pain management appointments. Board-certified physician Dr. Jeffrey Meyer provides our interventional pain management services at GRMC. We also offer various ophthalmology services locally, including treatment of macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusion and cataracts, in addition to reconstructive eye surgeries. Wound care patients can now see Jessica Gittinger, APRN, for all their wound care needs Monday through Thursday. Telemedicine appointments for endocrinology, rheumatology, nephrology and urology are also available in our offices.
GRMC provides rehabilitation services across all disciplines, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Our services are designed to help individuals maintain, regain or enhance skills and abilities for daily living, which may be affected by illness, injury or disability. Regardless of the specific service needed, we will evaluate and create a personalized treatment plan to address each patient’s unique condition. Our goal is to identify the underlying cause of the issue rather than simply addressing the symptoms. In 2024, we introduced lymphedema management services provided by Callie Guajardo, OTR/L, CLT.
Facility Upgrades
Goodland Regional Medical Center is an 85,000-square-foot facility spread across two levels. The original facility was constructed in 1970 and has had two major additions since then—the first in 1995, when the new clinic was constructed, and the second in 1997, when space was added for additional service offerings. Over the years, excellent building maintenance and strategic replacements have kept the facility in overall great shape, but in an ever-changing healthcare environment, the GRMC Board of Directors and senior leadership have again begun planning for the future.
Supported by an independent financial analysis and an independent facility assessment in 2023, followed by an independent market analysis in July 2024, the GRMC Board is now making plans to relocate some services within the facility in 2025. These changes will enhance patient safety and streamline staff efficiency.
“Exciting times lay ahead for GRMC,” Filpi said. “With the vision of the GRMC Board combined with the dedication of the GRMC staff, a clear path is set for GRMC to provide exceptional healthcare for you and your family for generations to come.”
