Meet Dr. Frankum- February 2020

Dr. Charles Frankum started at GRMC/GFHC on February 14, 2020. Dr. Frankum graduated from the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine in 1995. He continued his medical training in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery fellowship in Atlanta GA. He moved to Denver, Co in 2001 and began practice.  Outreach to rural hospitals became the primary focus of his career and by 2004 he was practicing in multiple hospitals along the Kansas and Colorado border. Over the last 20 years, he has worked in 15 different rural hospitals and is still actively practicing in 10 of them including 2 Denver hospitals.

As a general surgeon, Dr. Frankum performs a range of surgeries, usually focusing on areas and organs of the abdomen.  Dr. Frankum utilizes minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques reducing recovery time and stress on the patient’s body. Colorectal surgeons like Dr. Frankum specialize in the surgical and non-surgical care for structures of the lower digestive system, including the intestines, colon, and rectum. Dr. Frankum also treats conditions such as colon and rectal cancer, polyps, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and hemorrhoids. Other procedures such as hernia repair, gallbladder removal, colonoscopy, and gastroscopy are routine procedures that he performs.

Mardy Jo Gustafson, GRMC surgical services manager, stated that “The surgery department sees a community need for Dr. Frankum’s services. The decline in procedures after Dr. Huston retired has had a big impact on the department and the community. His specialty in GI services has us excited to serve him and the community.”

Dr. Frankum lives in Denver with his wife, Kristy and three sons. He enjoys hunting and fishing with his sons. His family spends part of their summer back at their family’s farm in the mountains of North Carolina. His boys are active in high school sports such as hockey and lacrosse.  Kristy works as an interior decorator in Denver. Dr. Frankum flies via small aircraft to his different work locations and is happy to be coming to Goodland, KS.

“I personally am excited to see him come here as he is well known is eastern Colorado and western Kansas. Patients having access to him will be wonderful for our communities.  I am happy to be working with him again, within the facility!” said Cristi Romans, RN.
